On February 13, 2020, Fanim Industries of Zionsville, Indiana announced a voluntary recall of its Harbor Breeze 48-inch Santa Ana Ceiling Fan in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) [1]. The fan was manufactured in China and imported by LG Sourcing, Inc. of Mooresville, North Carolina.

What Product Is Affected?

The recall covers the Harbor Breeze 48-inch Santa Ana Ceiling Fan, Model LP8294LBN, UPC 840506599178. The fan features two dark walnut fan blades, brushed nickel blade arm holders, and a frosted white glass globe containing a light bulb.

The model number can be found on the fan motor and on the inside of the battery compartment cover of the included handheld remote control. The recalled fans were sold exclusively at Lowe’s stores nationwide and online at Lowes.com from May 2014 through January 2016 for approximately $150.

What Is the Hazard?

The blade holders on the recalled ceiling fan can break during operation, allowing a fan blade to detach and be ejected from the fan at high speed. A fan blade launched from a rotating overhead fixture can strike anyone in the room below, posing a serious risk of lacerations, blunt force injuries, or worse.

Incidents and Injuries

Fanim Industries received 210 reports of fan blades breaking or ejecting from the recalled ceiling fan. Ten of those incidents resulted in a fan blade striking a consumer.

What Caused the Recall?

The recall was initiated after the company identified that the blade holders — the components that connect each fan blade to the fan motor housing — can fracture during use. Once a blade holder breaks, there is nothing to keep the attached blade from being thrown outward by centrifugal force, turning an overhead household appliance into a projectile hazard.

What Should Consumers Do?

Consumers who own the recalled Harbor Breeze Santa Ana ceiling fan should stop using it immediately. Fanim Industries is providing a free set of replacement blade holders to all affected consumers.

To request a replacement, consumers may contact Fanim Industries toll-free at 888-434-3797, Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. ET, by email at recall@fanimation.com, or online at www.fanimation.com and click on “Recalls” to submit a replacement request.

Can I File a Lawsuit?

Consumers who were struck by an ejected blade from a recalled Harbor Breeze Santa Ana ceiling fan — or who suffered property damage or other injury as a result — may have significant legal options. A class action lawsuit could allow affected consumers to seek compensation for medical expenses, pain and suffering, lost wages, and other related losses.
