What is Gadolinium?

Gadolinium contrast media (also known as MRI contrast media, agents or ‘dyes’) are chemical substances used in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans. When injected into the body, gadolinium enhances and improves the quality of the MRI images (or pictures). This allows the radiologist to more accurately report on how the patient’s body is working and whether there is any disease present.

Gadolinium Brand Names

Five gadolinium-based contrast agents have been approved for use in the United States:

  • Magnevist (gadopentetate dimeglumine)
  • Ablavar (gadofosveset trisodium)
  • Omniscan (gadodiamide)
  • OptiMARK (gadoversetamide)
  • MultiHance (gadobenate dimeglumine)
  • Prohance (gadoteridol)

What’s the Problem?

Gadolinium storage condition, also known as gadolinium deposition disease (GDD), is a rare medical phenomenon that has been linked to the use of contrast dyes in enhanced MRI exams. It was previously thought the disease is uncommon; however, recent studies indicate that gadolinium storage condition occurs much more frequently than previously estimated. Our lawyers feel there may be basis for lawsuits against gadolinium manufacturers for their failure to warn about gadolinium storage disease.

Gadolinium Storage Condition Symptoms

Symptoms of gadolinium storage condition usually begin to manifest shortly after administration of contrast dyes, and include:

  • Bone pain
  • Skin and subcutaneous tissue burning pain
  • “Chemo brain” or “brain fog”
  • Thickening / discoloration of the skin

FDA Warning

As a result of the potentially harmful effects of gadolinium contrast dyes, in December 2017 the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) is requiring stricter warnings for patients and more intensive guidelines for medical professionals. Additionally, the European Medicines Agency (EMA) has recommended the suspension of marketing authorizations for four linear GBCAs.

Are There Other Side Effects?

In addition to being linked to gadolinium storage condition / gadolinium deposition disease, the MRI contrast dye has been reported to cause the following side effects in certain patients:
Severe side effects

  • Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis (NSF)
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Cardiac arrest
  • Swelling of the throat or other parts of the body
  • Convulsions
  • Low blood pressure

Moderate reactions include:

  • Severe skin rash or hives
  • Wheezing
  • Abnormal heart rhythms
  • High or low blood pressure
  • Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing

Mild reactions include:

  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Headache
  • Itching
  • Flushing
  • Mild skin rash or hives

Can I Participate in a Class Action?

In an effort to maximize compensation for our clients, our lawyers have decided against filing a class action lawsuit in the gadolinium litigation, and are only filing individual claims on behalf of people with gadolinium storage condition. We feel this was the best course of action because in these types of cases, class action lawsuits often result in higher attorney fees and low settlement agreements. This is why an individual lawsuit is superior to a class action claim, in our opinion.
