April 23, 2026 – Tzumi Electronics Inc. of New York, New York recalled about 50,000 FitRx SmartBell Quick-Select 5-52.5lbs Adjustable Dumbbells model 8361 sold at Walmart stores nationwide and online from January 2024 through November 2024 for about $100 after receiving more than 115 reports of weight plates dislodging during use. At least six injuries were reported including broken toes, bruises, contusions and lacerations [1].
115 Failure Reports
Tzumi documented more than 115 separate incidents of weight plates dislodging during normal use. That’s not 115 complaints—that’s 115 actual equipment failures where weight plates fell off dumbbells while people were exercising.
Broken Toes from Falling Weights
At least one person suffered broken toes when weight plates dislodged and fell onto their feet. A 52.5-pound weight plate dropping from shoulder height onto bare or shoe-covered toes creates enormous impact force capable of fracturing multiple bones.
Lacerations and Contusions
Beyond broken bones, victims suffered lacerations requiring stitches and deep tissue contusions from being struck by falling metal weight plates. These aren’t minor bumps—these are injuries serious enough to require medical documentation and reporting to the manufacturer.
The Quick-Select Design Flaw
The SmartBell uses a quick-select mechanism where users turn the handle to the desired weight while the dumbbell sits in its storage tray. This selection system should lock weight plates securely, but the mechanism fails during actual exercise movements.
5 to 52.5 Pound Range
These adjustable dumbbells allow weight selection from 5 to 52.5 pounds in 2.5 or 5-pound increments. The heavier the selected weight, the more plates are engaged—and the more plates that can dislodge and fall.
Specific Serial Numbers Only
Not all FitRx SmartBells are recalled—only those with serial numbers KK23288361 through KK23388361 and KK207608361 through KK21347836. Consumers must check the serial number on the side of the storage tray to determine if their unit is affected.
Black with Red Accents
The recalled dumbbells feature black construction with red accent colors. Each set includes the dumbbell handles, weight plates, and a molded plastic storage tray where the weight selection occurs.
Walmart Exclusive Distribution
These dumbbells sold exclusively at Walmart stores nationwide and through Walmart.com. The 11-month sales window from January through November 2024 means thousands of American homes contain these defective exercise equipment pieces.
The $100 Price Point
At $100, these weren’t budget dumbbells—they positioned as mid-range home gym equipment. Consumers paid serious money expecting quality construction that wouldn’t fall apart during workouts.
Made in China
Tzumi Electronics manufactured these dumbbells in China. Quality control failures during manufacturing allowed defective locking mechanisms to reach American consumers’ home gyms.
The Disposal Requirement
Consumers must write “Recalled” across the dumbbell tray using permanent spray paint or marker before disposing of the product. This permanent marking prevents resale or donation of dangerous equipment.
Registration Before Disposal
Users cannot simply throw away the recalled dumbbells—they must first register at myfitrx.com/recall-52-lbs/ and wait for confirmation before disposal. This administrative burden delays elimination of the hazard from homes.
Free Replacement Offered
Tzumi provides free replacement dumbbells and storage trays to affected consumers. The fact that both the dumbbell and tray require replacement suggests the defect involves the entire weight selection and locking system.
Impact Hazard During Exercise
Weight plates dislodging during curls, presses, or rows creates immediate danger. When you’re mid-repetition with a 50-pound dumbbell overhead and plates suddenly release, you face impact injuries to feet, shins, thighs, or wherever the falling weights land.
Home Gym Safety Expectations
People using home gym equipment expect it to function safely during vigorous exercise movements. Dumbbells that shed weight plates mid-workout violate basic fitness equipment safety standards.
The Molded Plastic Tray
The storage tray uses molded plastic construction where the weight selection mechanism operates. If the plastic tray warps, cracks, or degrades, it could affect the locking mechanism’s ability to securely hold selected weight plates.
Multiple Plate Configuration
To reach 52.5 pounds, the dumbbell must engage multiple weight plates stacked together. Each plate represents a potential dislodgement point—if the locking mechanism fails, all engaged plates can release simultaneously.
Exercise Movement Forces
Dumbbell exercises involve acceleration, deceleration, changes in direction, and momentum that create dynamic forces on the weight plate locking system. These real-world forces during actual workouts revealed the design’s inability to keep plates secured.
FitRx Brand Reputation
The FitRx brand markets fitness and recovery products. This recall damages brand credibility when basic equipment safety fails so catastrophically that over 100 users experience weight plate failures.
Fast Track Recall Designation
The CPSC designated this as a Fast Track Recall, indicating the company cooperated quickly to remove dangerous products from the market. However, fast cooperation doesn’t undo the 115+ failures or the six injuries already suffered.
Contact an Attorney
If you suffered broken bones, lacerations, contusions, or other injuries from FitRx SmartBell weight plates dislodging during use, contact a product liability attorney immediately. Preserve the dumbbell and storage tray exactly as they are without marking or disposing of them yet, photograph the locking mechanism and serial numbers, save all medical records documenting broken toes or other impact injuries, and keep purchase receipts from Walmart showing the date and price paid.
