What’s the Problem?
This FDA Recall began on Feb. 19, 2021, and affects the following cheese produced by El Abuelito Cheese of Paterson, New Jersey:

- 12 oz. El Abuelito Cheese Queso Guatemala – UPC 673130100027
- 12 oz. El Abuelito Cheese Queso Guatemala – UPC 673130100027
- 12 oz. Rio Grande Food Products Chirilagua Queso de Hacienda – UPC 738529005571
- 14 oz. Rio Grande Food Products Queso Fresco Campestre con Hoja – UPC 812324031161

“As of February 11, 2021, the CDC reports seven people infected with the outbreak strain of Listeria monocytogenes from four states,” FDA said. “El Abuelito has ceased the production and distribution of the product as FDA and El Abuelito continue their investigation as to what caused the problem.”
The El Abuelito Cheese brand products were distributed in Connecticut, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and New York.
The Rio Grande Food Products were distributed in Virginia, North Carolina, and Maryland.
The Rio Lindo cheeses were distributed in North Carolina and Maryland.
All of the recalled products were distributed through Feb 16. 2021, to supermarkets, wholesale, and retails stores in the above states.
Consumers who purchased any recalled cheese should either discard it or return it for a full refund.
Anyone concerned about a listeria infection from recalled Queso Fresco cheese should dial 9-1-1 immediately.
