Latest Updates
On June 4, 2026, the CPSC issued a product safety warning covering COOWALI heated insoles, sold alongside the identical COOWALK-branded version, due to the risk of serious burn injury and fire [1]. Roughly 6,000 units are affected across both brand names. The Chinese manufacturer, Shenzhen Kubuzhineng Kejiyouxiangongsi, has refused to cooperate with the CPSC’s request for a recall.
Product Details
COOWALI heated insoles are sold in black and red, with “COOWALI” printed directly on the sole of the product. A lithium-ion battery is embedded in the heel of each insole, and the heating function is controlled by a wireless remote.
These insoles were sold online through Amazon.com and GearTrade.com between August 2022 and May 2026.
Why Is This Product Dangerous?
Unlike many defective lithium-ion products that only pose a risk during charging or active use, the COOWALI insoles can ignite or explode at any time — including while the device is switched off. Given that the battery sits directly against the wearer’s foot inside a shoe, there is little to no warning before a thermal event occurs, and even less opportunity to remove the product safely.
Documented Incidents and Injuries
According to the CPSC, 26 separate incidents involving fire, explosion, or other thermal failure have been linked to the COOWALK/COOWALI insoles. Of those, at least 23 resulted in burn injuries to consumers, with some victims sustaining second- and third-degree burns severe enough to require skin grafts.
What If I Own a Pair?
Consumers who own COOWALI heated insoles should stop wearing them immediately and dispose of them through a certified household hazardous waste (HHW) facility. Because the battery inside is classified as defective, it cannot be placed in ordinary trash, curbside recycling, or typical battery drop-off boxes at retail stores.
Before visiting an HHW facility, consumers should call ahead to confirm that defective lithium-ion batteries are accepted, as not all locations handle this category of hazardous waste. Any injuries or product failures should also be reported directly to the CPSC at www.SaferProducts.gov.
Can I File a Lawsuit?
Anyone who suffered a burn injury caused by a COOWALI heated insole catching fire or exploding — particularly those requiring medical treatment or skin graft surgery — may have significant legal options. A class action lawsuit could allow injured consumers to recover compensation for medical bills, surgical costs, pain and suffering, scarring or disfigurement, lost income, and other related damages. Contact an attorney promptly to discuss your legal rights.
