What’s the Problem?

Since the early 1970s, dozens of peer-reviewed studies have identified a troubling link between talcum powder and ovarian cancer, and determined that women who use talc regularly on and around their vagina are 33% more likely to develop the disease compared to women who don’t. As many as 10,000 women develop ovarian cancer each year as a result of talcum powder use, according to Harvard epidemiologist Dr. Daniel Cramer.

How Can Talc Cause Cancer?

Talc, the main ingredient in Clubman Pinaud Talc until the mid 70s, is a naturally-occurring mineral composed of magnesium, silicon and oxygen. The substance is renowned for its ability to absorb moisture, reduce friction and prevent rashes. Talc-based products have been marketed for decades to women for feminine hygiene purposes as body powder and genital deodorant sprays.

However, it has been found that talc particles may enter the female reproductive system through tampons, sanitary pads and diaphragms that are dusted with baby powder. Talc particles that reach the ovaries can result in the growth of ovarian cancer cells. Experts estimate that roughly 1 in 5 women in the U.S. applies a talcum powder product to her genitals regularly.

Ovarian Cancer Symptoms

Many cases of ovarian cancer start silently, not showing symptoms until its later stages. When they do present, however, symptoms may include:

  • Bloating
  • Pelvic pain
  • Urinary problems

Contact your doctor if you have one or more of these symptoms for more than 2 weeks.

How Do I Know if Talcum Powder Caused my Ovarian Cancer?

Talc fibers can be found in the ovaries and fallopian tubes for years after entering a woman’s reproductive system. Talc fibers take years to disintegrate and cause inflammation in the ovaries, which is believed to increase the risk of cancer. If talc fibers are present in your ovarian tissues, our researchers will identify them.

Talc Cancer Lawsuit Allegations

Talcum powder lawsuits allege that manufacturers failed to warn consumers about the potential risk of ovarian cancer to women when talc is applied to the genitals. The complaints also allege that these health risks were known to manufacturers for years or even decades, but they ignored the data in an effort to maximize profits.

About Class Action Lawsuits

Although we are a nationally recognized class action firm, the Products Liability Litigation Group at our law firm has decided against the filing of a Clubman Pinaud Talc class action suit and is currently filing individual claims on behalf of injured individuals and/or their family members that have been diagnosed with cancer after using talcum powder products.

A class action is a type of lawsuit filed with the court on behalf of large group of people or “class” of individuals that have been injured or wronged. The class is represented by the law firm and the case is generally decided upon a single member of the class who is sometimes referred to as the “class representative or class rep.”

Why Our Law Firm Is Filing Individual Lawsuits Opposed To a Class Action

In some instances, a class action may offer some advantages, as they aggregate a large number of individualized claims into one representational lawsuit. The aggregation can increase the efficiency of the legal process, lower the costs of litigation and in some cases offer the solution to a common problem wherein small recoveries do not provide the incentive for any individual or law firm to file an individual lawsuit.

However, a class action suit can also be a detriment to many class members, as they are often forced into a blanket “low ball settlement” and higher attorney fees. At Schmidt & Clark, LLP we understand that our clients are suffering emotionally and economically due to loss of wages and/or high medical bills and we plan to maximize each client’s recovery by filing individual talc lawsuits on their behalf.
