The Jesuits claim that many of the complaints were received after the accused had died. So in those cases thorough investigations could not be undertaken. Deceased individuals are included in the list based on the fact that an accusation was reported.

What’s the Problem?

One of the names on the list is Segundo Llorente, who served at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Pocatello, Idaho, from 1982 to 1984. He also served at St. Stanislaus Church in Lewiston from 1984 to 1989. He died in 1989, according to the letter. The claims were for 1962-1963, and the mid-1960s, for alleged sexual abuse of a minor.

Jesuits West, whose territory covers 10 western states, said its investigation found credible allegations against 111 priests, brothers or priests in training dating back to 1950. No one on the list is serving the public in the same capacity, the letter said.

In an earlier communication, the Jesuits U.S. Central and Southern Province, which covers 13 states along with Puerto Rico and the country of Belize, released the names of 42 men who had ties to the province back to 1955. It said 4 are still members of the Jesuits but are not active and live in supervised housing.

Many of the men on the lists have died, and others have been dismissed of ordination, officials said. Most of the men served as priests when the alleged crimes occurred.

A 3rd province that covers several Midwestern states, the Midwest Province, is due to announce its own findings on Dec. 17.
