The Monsanto Company was slammed with a massive $289 million fine last week by a California jury who sided with a former groundskeeper that was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma after using Roundup weed killer.

What’s the problem?
The jury ruled that Roundup and Ranger Pro products presented a “substantial danger” to Plaintiff Dewayne “Lee” Johnson, a former groundskeeper who developed non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma after using the chemicals for just over 2 years. The jurors concluded that Monsanto was aware of the potential health risks associated with glyphosate — the active ingredient in Roundup — yet failed to adequately warn the public and medical community in an attempt to maximize profits.
Johnson’s lawsuit was the first to go to trial of some 4,000 similar complaints accusing Monsanto of failure to warn against the cancer risk with Roundup.
Carey Gillam, an investigative journalist and author of the new book, “Whitewash,” which details the history of Monsanto and glyphosate, told FOX Business that Johnson’s suit called to the fore Monsanto’s attempt to bury research linking the herbicide to cancer since at least the 1970s.
With the mountain of litigation it has in front of it, Monsanto could be in court for decades and could cost its new owner, Bayer, hundreds of millions – if not billions – in damages.
“The case is historic. It is the first time secrets from within Monsanto have been laid bare in a public court of law for all to scrutinize,” Gillam says. “Monsanto is facing a flood of thousands of additional lawsuits with several trials already scheduled over the next several months.”
Aaron Johnson, a 48-year-old former macadamia nut farmer, who was diagnosed with lymphoma in 2014, is up to bat next against Monsanto, looking for redemption against the biotech giant after he was diagnosed with the disease after working with its glyphosate-based herbicides for more than a dozen years.
