Latest Updates
On January 4, 2024, Ride Aventon Inc. of Brea, California announced a voluntary recall of approximately 2,300 Class 2 Sinch.2 Folding E-Bicycles in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) [1]. A class action lawsuit investigation is now underway on behalf of consumers who purchased the recalled e-bikes.
What Products Are Affected?
The recall covers the Aventon Class 2 Sinch.2 Folding E-Bicycle, a 500-watt folding electric bike with front and rear tires and foldable handlebars. The affected e-bikes were sold in two colors:
- Silver (Quicksilver)
- Blue (Sapphire)
The name “Aventon” is printed on the side of the downtube of the bike frame, and “Sinch.2” is printed on the chain stay connecting the rear wheel to the frame. The recalled e-bikes were sold at bicycle stores nationwide and online at BestBuy.com and Eriksbikeshop.com from April 2023 through August 2023 for approximately $1,800. The e-bikes were manufactured in China and imported by Ride Aventon Inc.
What Is the Hazard?
The recalled Sinch.2 e-bikes can accelerate without warning while in use, causing the rider to lose control of the bicycle. Unexpected acceleration on an e-bike — which can reach assisted speeds of up to 20 miles per hour — significantly increases the risk of a serious crash, potentially resulting in broken bones, head injuries, road rash, and other traumatic injuries. The defect is attributed to a software issue in the e-bike’s controller.
Incidents and Injuries
Ride Aventon has received six reports of the recalled Sinch.2 e-bikes accelerating unexpectedly during use. No injuries have been reported in connection with these incidents to date.
What Caused the Recall?
The recall was initiated after Ride Aventon identified a software defect in the e-bike’s controller that can cause the motor to engage or surge without rider input, resulting in sudden, unintended acceleration. The remedy is a free software update to the controller, which is performed by an authorized Ride Aventon dealer. The recalled e-bikes were manufactured in China and imported by Ride Aventon Inc. of Brea, California.
What Should Consumers Do?
Consumers who own the recalled Aventon Sinch.2 Folding E-Bicycle should stop riding it immediately and contact a Ride Aventon authorized dealer to schedule a free repair. The repair consists of a software update to the e-bike’s controller and is provided at no cost to the consumer.
Consumers with questions may contact Ride Aventon toll-free at 866-300-3311, Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. PT, by email at info@aventon.com, or online at www.aventon.com/pages/recalls.
Can I File a Lawsuit?
Consumers who purchased the recalled Aventon Sinch.2 Folding E-Bicycle — particularly those who were injured in a crash caused by unexpected acceleration — may have significant legal options. A class action lawsuit could allow affected consumers to seek compensation for medical expenses, pain and suffering, lost wages, property damage, and other related losses. Contact an attorney to learn more about your rights and whether you qualify to participate in a class action investigation.
