How the Contamination Was Confirmed
FDA inspectors entered August Egg Company’s cage-free laying houses and collected environmental samples that tested positive for Salmonella Enteritidis in three locations. Whole genome sequencing then confirmed the genetic match between bacteria found in the facility and the strain recovered from outbreak patients — directly establishing the laying house as the contamination source.
