Overview

The U.S. Food & Drug Administration issued the warning after it looked at case reports and at least 4 observational studies which found that fluoroquinolone users had twice the rates of aortic dissection and/or aortic tears compared to patients who had never taken the medications.

Fluoroquinolones are a common class of antibiotics which include a large number of prescription medications:

  • Avelox (generic: moxifloxacin)
  • Baxdela (generic: delafloxacin)
  • Cipro (generic: ciprofloxacin)
  • Factive (generic: gemifloxacin)
  • Levaquin (levofloxacin)
  • Floxin (generic: ofloxacin)
  • And more

An aortic rupture occurs when the wall of the aorta bursts and blood leaks out, so that not enough blood can get to the rest of the body. Most cases of aortic rupture are fatal, according to Forbes.

Ruptures are more common in patients whose aorta has already become progressively weaker and begins swelling like a balloon, a condition called an aortic aneurysm. Smoking, atherosclerosis, high blood pressure (hypertension), and pre-existing blood vessel diseases and infections can put you at higher risk for an aortic rupture.

FDA said fluoroquinolones should be avoided in patients with an increased risk of heart damage, unless all other options have been exhausted. Patients at risk “… include those with a history of blockages or aneurysms (abnormal bulges) of the aorta or other blood vessels, high blood pressure, certain genetic disorders that involve blood vessel changes, and the elderly,” the agency said.
