Mary Iorio was widowed in November 2013 when her husband Maurice, a diabetes patient who used Actos (generic: pioglitazone) to control his blood sugar, died after having surgery to remove his bladder. Mrs. Iorio believes Actos was the cause of her husband’s bladder cancer, and is suing drugmaker Takeda Pharmaceuticals for damages.

What’s the Problem?
September 1, 2015 – Maurice Iorio was told in 2011 that he had a spot on his liver; however, according to his wife Mary, “Nobody mentioned the word ‘cancer.’” Maurice underwent his first surgery to have the spot removed that August, but the growth returned shortly thereafter.
In the summer of 2013, Iorio traveled from his home in Las Vegas to Chicago for surgery to remove his bladder. Unfortunately, he never returned home after the operation, and died of bladder cancer complications on November 25, at the age of 74.
“I got a call 6 O’clock Monday morning that he had passed away,” Mary recalled while testifying during trial at the Regional Justice Center on August 31, 2015.
Iorio, 78, is one of two plaintiffs named in a Las Vegas product liability trial against Takeda. The other plaintiff, 77-year-old George Decou, was diagnosed with bladder cancer four years ago.
Takeda Facing Thousands of Actos Bladder Cancer Lawsuits
Iorio and Decou join thousands of people across the U.S. who have sued Takeda, accusing the company of failing to warn about the bladder cancer risk associated with Actos. The drug, which was approved by the FDA in 1999, has been linked to an 83% increased risk of bladder cancer, as well as other serious side effects including liver failure and bone fractures.
