Update: Zero Motorcycles Recalled Over Faulty Brake Switch, Crash Hazard
The NHTSA on Nov. 30, 2020, announced that Zero is recalling 2020 SR/F and SR/S motorcycles which were sold with a front brake switch that can fail from exposure to water. This problem can cause the brake light not to illuminate when the rider applies the front brakes, and the cruise control not to shut off with the application of the brakes. Both conditions increase the risk of a crash, NHTSA said. Zero’s number for this recall is SV-ZMC-021-020.
What’s the Problem?
The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has announced a recall for certain Zero Motorcycles over a potentially defective electrical component which could cause the brakes and other critical accessories to fail during use.
This NHTSA Recall began on Oct. 26, 2020, and affects the following Zero Motorcycles:
- 2021 Zero SR
- 2021 Zero S
- 2021 Zero DSR
- 2021 Zero DS
- 2021 Zero FX
- 2021 Zero FXS
“The DCDC converter has an insufficient power output margin to operate the anti-lock braking system (ABS), instruments, lights, indicators, and any accessories that are connected to the accessory outlet at once,” NHTSA said. “The DCDC converter can shut off when its power capacity is exceeded, shutting off the ABS, instruments, and lights, increasing the risk of a crash.”
If you purchased a motorcycle that is affected by this recall, you should stop using it immediately and contact your Zero dealer for a free replacement DC-DC converter.
