Update: Volkswagen Recalls Atlas SUVs Over Crash Risk
The NHTSA on Feb. 16, 2021, announced that Volkswagen is recalling 2021 Atlas and 2020-2021 Atlas Cross Sport vehicles which were sold with a front steering knuckle that may fracture in the area of the strut mounting, which could cause a loss of vehicle control and increase the risk of a crash. Volkswagen is notifying owners and dealers will inspect and, as necessary, replace one or both steering knuckles, free of charge. Volkswagen’s number for this recall is 40Q7.
What’s the Problem?
According to the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), this recall affects the following VW Atlas vehicles equipped with Continental Cross Contact LX Sport tires, size 255/50 R 20 105 T:
- 2020-2021 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport
- 2021 Volkswagen Atlas
Affected Continental Cross Contact LX Sport tires may have been over cured, which can result in a sidewall break causing a sudden loss of air pressure or the tread separating from the tire. “Both conditions increase the risk of a crash,” NHTSA said.
If you purchased a vehicle that is affected by this recall, you should stop using it immediately and contact your Volkswagen dealer for a free replacement set of tires.
This recall began November 30, 2020. Volkswagen’s number for this recall is 44Q5.
