Update: Thor Montecito Recalled for Transfer Switch Defect, Fire Risk
The NHTSA announced on Jan. 3, 2021, that Thor is recalling the following motorhomes equipped with an Iota ITS-50R transfer switch:
- 2010-2011 Thor Montecito 38D
- 2010-2011 Thor Montecito 38E
- 2010-2011 Thor Montecito 40J
- 2010-2011 Thor Montecito 42B
- 2010-2011 Thor Montecito 42C
“The transfer switch may experience a heat related failure due to being exposed to high electrical loads when used in higher ambient temperatures,” NHTSA said. “If the transfer switch continues to be used, it can increase the risk of a fire.”
Thor is notifying owners and dealers will replace the Iota ITS-50R transfer switch with a different brand of switch, free of charge. Thor’s number for this recall is RC000205.
What’s the Problem?
This NHTSA recall began on October 20, 2020, and affects 2019-2021 Thor Hurricane and Thor Windsport motorhomes, models 27B, 29M, 32T, 33X, 34J, 34R and 35M.
“The electronic control center circuit board may be damaged from voltages over 17 volts or a reverse polarity situation,” NHTSA said. “A damaged circuit board could increase the risk of a fire.”
Consumers who purchased a motorhome that is affected by this recall should stop using it immediately and contact their Thor dealer to schedule a free repair.
