Latest Updates
On May 7, 2026, Stoltzfus Family Dairy of Vernon Center, New York announced a voluntary recall of its Sour Cream and Onion Cheese Curds. The FDA published the recall announcement the same day [1]. No illnesses or injuries related to these products have been reported to date.
What Products Are Affected?
The recall covers Sour Cream and Onion Cheese Curds sold in 8 oz bags with the following Best By dates:
- Best By: 03/25/2026
- Best By: 04/23/2026
- Best By: 04/29/2026
- Best By: 05/06/2026
The affected products were distributed exclusively within New York State, to grocery stores, gas stations, and other country stores. Consumers should check the Best By date printed on the packaging to determine whether their product is included in the recall.
What Is the Hazard?
The recalled cheese curds have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella, a bacterium that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections. Young children, elderly individuals, and those with weakened immune systems face the greatest risk of severe illness.
People infected with Salmonella typically experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. In rare cases, the infection can enter the bloodstream and lead to more serious conditions, including arterial infections, endocarditis, and arthritis.
What Caused the Recall?
The recall was triggered by a separate recall issued by California Dairies, Inc. involving potential Salmonella contamination in milk powder. Stoltzfus Family Dairy used that milk powder as an ingredient in the Sour Cream and Onion seasoning blend applied to its cheese curds.
After identifying the potentially affected batches, the company began working with its retail partners to ensure that any product still in the field is destroyed or returned. Stoltzfus Family Dairy has also notified the FDA and is cooperating with agency officials.
What Should Consumers Do?
Consumers who purchased any of the recalled Sour Cream and Onion Cheese Curds should not consume them. Products should be returned to the store where they were purchased.
