What are Skechers Light-Up Shoes?
Energy Lights by Skechers are trendy among children due to their colorful array of lights which are activated each time they take a step. Since their initial release in 2015, there have been nearly 50 styles of light up shoes released, which generally cost between $40 and $80.
What’s the Problem?
All of the affected Skechers shoes, made in both boys and girls styles, include a nickel-cadmium (nicad) battery encased in the heel or mid-sole of the shoe. The problem is that the airtight seal does not allow the battery to vent, which causes gas to build, potentially causing it to overheat or even explode in some cases. These events have destroyed the users’ shoes and caused severe chemical burn injuries, according to complaints.

“When the sneakers got wet that caused them to release a chemical that burnt the bottom of his feet,” the woman said. “He did not complain to his teacher. He waited until the next day until he came home to tell us.”
