On March 20, 2025, Sensio Inc. of New York announced a voluntary recall of its Bella Pro Series and Cooks Steam Espresso Machines in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) [1]. Approximately 12,300 units are affected. The recalled espresso machines were manufactured in China and imported by Sensio Inc.

What Products Are Affected?

The recall covers two steam espresso machine models sold under different brand names. Both are black with stainless steel trim, measure approximately six inches wide and 12 inches high, and have the brand name printed on the steaming chamber. The affected models are:

  • Bella Pro Series Steam Espresso Maker, Model 90195 — “Bella Pro Series” printed on the steaming chamber
  • Cooks Steam Espresso Maker, Model 22395 — “Cooks” printed on the steaming chamber

The model number is identified as the “Item” number on a sticker located on the underside of the machine. The recalled machines were sold at JCPenney stores nationwide and online at BestBuy.com and JCPenney.com from August 2023 through January 2025 for between $40 and $60.

What Is the Hazard?

The brew cup handle on the recalled espresso machines can forcefully eject during use. When this occurs, the sudden release of pressure can shatter the glass carafe, scattering glass fragments and sending scalding hot liquid onto the consumer, posing simultaneous burn and laceration hazards.

Incidents and Injuries

Sensio has received 18 reports of the brew cup handle ejecting on the recalled machines. Of those incidents, eight resulted in burn injuries, laceration injuries, or both to consumers.

What Caused the Recall?

The recall was initiated after Sensio identified a defect in the brew cup handle mechanism that allows it to disengage under pressure during the brewing process. The force of the ejection is sufficient to shatter the glass carafe and expose anyone in close proximity to both hot liquid and broken glass simultaneously — a particularly dangerous combination during an everyday kitchen appliance’s normal operation.

What Should Consumers Do?

Consumers who own either of the recalled Sensio espresso machines should stop using them immediately and contact Sensio for a full refund.

Consumers may reach Sensio toll-free at 855-647-3125, Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. ET, or online at www.bellakitchenware.com by clicking on “Recalls” for more information.

Can I File a Lawsuit?

Consumers who purchased the recalled Bella Pro Series or Cooks Steam Espresso Machine — particularly those who suffered burn injuries, lacerations, or both when the brew cup handle ejected — may have significant legal options. A class action lawsuit could allow affected consumers to seek compensation for medical expenses, pain and suffering, lost wages, and other related losses.
