What’s the Problem?
October 2, 2017 – Plaintiff alleges that the Exactech knee was designed defectively, and that the manufacturer was not only aware of problems with the knee implant, but actually tried to conceal this knowledge in an effort to maximize profits.
The problem with the Optetrak knee has been linked to a finned tibial tray design that does not allow for proper adherence to the patient’s bone, according to lawsuits. This can result in loosening, instability, pain and infections. Exactech knee failure could require revision surgery and device replacement, not to mention threatening the patient’s safety and quality of life.
In 2010, Exactech settled with the U.S. government for $3 million to settle allegations that the company gave kickbacks to orthopedic surgeons. Then in 2013, the company had a string of product recalls involving both hip and shoulder replacement devices due to incorrect and transposed product labeling.
The new Exactech lawsuit was filed Wednesday, and is the first complaint alleging injuries from the Optetrak knee to be filed in the state of Georgia. Considering the fact that about 600,000 knee replacement surgeries are performed each year in the U.S., there could be many such lawsuits to be filed in the coming weeks and months, as awareness about the risk of knee replacement complications grows.
