Update: Onion Chopper Recalled Over Laceration Risk
The CPSC has announced a recall for about 106,000 Onion Chopper Pro appliances over concerns that “the product’s locking tab can detach from the rest of the unit during use, causing hands and fingers to slide into the blades.” The agency is aware of at least 266 incidents of the tab breaking, resulting in 137 laceration injuries to the hands and fingers. Consumers who purchased a recalled Onion Chopper should stop using it immediately and contact Mueller Austria for a free replacement. The CPSC Recall Number for this item is 21-017.
What’s the Problem?
According to a CPSC Consumer Alert dated 5/28/20, the Onion Chopper Pro features a locking tab that can detach from the rest of the unit during use, causing hands and fingers to slide into the blades, posing a serious laceration hazard.
CPSC’s warning only applies to Onion Chopper Pro model #M-700; Mueller Austria introduced a new Onion Chopper Pro in Dec. 2019 that features a different locking tab configuration. This version is safe to use and not included in the consumer alert, the agency said.
The recalled Onion Choppers were sold online between September 2016 and December 2019 for about $20, according to the CPSC.
If you purchased an Onion Chopper Pro model #M-700, you should stop using it immediately. Mueller Austria and CPSC are working together to issue a joint recall of the product, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, a timeline for the recall has not yet been specified. More information will be made public as soon as a remedy is possible.
