Recall Details and Affected Products

Navitas Organics has initiated a voluntary safety recall affecting select lots of its 8-ounce Organic Chia Seeds packages. The company took this precautionary action following notification from its chia seed supplier about a recall at the supply chain level. The safety action involves Navitas Organics – Organic Chia Seeds packaged in sealed stand-up pouches measuring 8 ounces. The product carries UPC 858847000284 printed on the packaging.

Eight specific lot codes are included in this recall, each identified by 9-digit codes beginning with the letter “W”. Lot codes appear printed on the back of the chia seed bag positioned above the nutritional information panel.

The recalled lot codes are: W31025283, W31025286, W31025287, W31025311, W31025314, W31025315, W31025316, and W31025317. These products display “Best If Used By” dates of either End APR 2027 or End MAY 2027 [1].

Where Recalled Products Were Sold

The affected chia seed products received nationwide distribution through multiple retail channels. Physical retail locations included Whole Foods Market stores across the United States.

Online distribution occurred through Amazon and various other internet retailers. This widespread distribution network means recalled products reached consumers in all states.

Salmonella Contamination Hazard

Federal health regulators identified potential Salmonella contamination in these organic chia seed products. Salmonella represents a bacterial organism capable of causing serious and potentially fatal infections in vulnerable populations.

The contamination risk originated at the supplier level when Navitas Organics’ chia seed supplier initiated a recall. This supply chain issue prompted Navitas Organics to take precautionary measures by recalling potentially affected finished products.

Health Risks from Salmonella Infection

Salmonella infections pose serious health risks, particularly for certain vulnerable groups. Young children, frail or elderly individuals, and people with weakened immune systems face heightened risks of severe and sometimes fatal infections.

Healthy individuals infected with Salmonella typically experience fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, Salmonella infection progresses to bloodstream involvement, producing more severe illnesses requiring hospitalization.

Symptoms and Onset

Salmonella infection symptoms typically develop between 6 and 72 hours after exposure to contaminated food products. Symptoms can persist for up to one week in most cases.

Warning signs requiring immediate medical attention include high fever exceeding 101.5°F, prolonged diarrhea lasting several days, or blood present in stool. Severe cases may require medical treatment or hospitalization for dehydration management.

Incidents and Illnesses

Navitas Organics has not received any reports of Salmonella detected in their finished products to date. No illnesses or adverse medical events have been reported or identified in connection with these recalled chia seeds.

The recall represents a precautionary measure rather than a response to confirmed contamination or consumer illness. However, the absence of reported illnesses does not eliminate potential health risks from consuming recalled products.

Product Identification

Consumers can identify recalled products by examining specific information printed on the package. The 12-digit UPC barcode 858847000284 appears on all affected chia seed pouches.

The 9-digit lot code starting with “W” provides the definitive identification of recalled products. Consumers must check the back of their chia seed bags above the nutritional information to locate this critical lot code.

What Consumers Should Do

Consumers who possess any 8oz Organic Chia Seeds with the listed lot numbers must not consume them under any circumstances. Navitas Organics instructs owners to open the bag, discard the chia seeds, and dispose of the packaging in a manner rendering it unusable.

Consumers can return the affected product to their place of purchase to receive a full refund. For additional assistance or questions, consumers may contact Navitas Organics Consumer Care at 855-215-5702 during operating hours of 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. ET, Monday through Friday.

Company Statement

Ira Haber, CEO of Navitas Organics, addressed the recall in an official statement. “Navitas has provided Organic Chia Seeds to our customers for more than 20 years,” Haber stated.

“Providing safe, healthy food for our customers is why we have been in business this long and it’s why we are recalling this product today,” the CEO continued. No other Navitas Organics products are affected by this recall action.

Salmonella Survival in Dry Foods

Salmonella bacteria can survive for extended periods in low-moisture foods like chia seeds. This survival capability makes dry food products potential contamination vehicles despite their dry state.

Once ingested, Salmonella can multiply in the intestines and cause infection even though the seeds themselves appear dry and shelf-stable. This characteristic makes visual inspection insufficient for determining product safety.

Vulnerable Populations at Greater Risk

Certain demographic groups face substantially elevated risks from Salmonella infections. Young children’s developing immune systems make them particularly susceptible to severe complications.

Older adults, pregnant individuals, and anyone with compromised immune systems also experience heightened vulnerability. These populations may develop severe illness, dehydration requiring hospitalization, or life-threatening complications from Salmonella exposure.

Proper Disposal Instructions

Consumers must not donate, sell, or redistribute recalled chia seed products. Proper disposal requires opening the bag to discard the seeds and rendering the packaging unusable to prevent accidental consumption by others.

Simply discarding unopened packages creates risks that others might retrieve and use them. Taking destruction steps ensures recalled products do not enter food supplies through secondary channels.

Medical Attention Guidance

Consumers who consumed recalled chia seeds should monitor themselves for Salmonella infection symptoms. Fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, or abdominal pain developing within one week of consumption warrants medical evaluation.

Individuals experiencing severe symptoms should seek medical attention promptly. Healthcare providers can assess symptoms, order appropriate testing, and recommend treatment if Salmonella infection is confirmed.
