What’s the Problem?
June 20, 2018 – The lawsuit, which Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey claims is the first to specifically name pharmaceutical executives in connection with opioid deaths, was filed against Purdue Pharma, who is already being sued by several other states and local governments.
“Purdue Pharma and its executives built a multi-billion-dollar business based on deception and addiction,” Healey tweeted in response to the news. “We’re suing.”
The complaint names 16 current and former Purdue executives and board members, including CEO Craig Landau and members of the Sackler family, who own the company.
The suit claims that Purdue downplayed health risks of opioids and encouraged physicians to keep patients on the meds for longer periods of time while aggressively marketing to at-risk populations, such as the elderly and U.S. military veterans.
“Their strategy was simple: The more drugs they sold, the more money they made, and the more people died,” Healey said.
