Latest Updates
CPSC announced the stroller’s front wheel bearing can fail or detach, posing a fall and injury hazard. [1] There have been 25 incidents of restricted front wheel movement reported, including 12 incidents where the wheel fork bearing wore through the housing and detached, with one fall resulting in bruises when the user fell onto the stroller. [1]
25 Incidents of Restricted Wheel Movement
Joovy received 25 total incidents of front wheels failing to rotate freely. Restricted wheel movement causes strollers to veer unexpectedly or stop abruptly during jogging or walking.
12 Bearing Detachment Incidents
In 12 incidents, wheel fork bearings wore completely through the housing and detached from the strollers. Bearing detachment causes sudden front wheel collapse creating immediate fall hazards.
One Injury Reported
One user fell onto the stroller after bearing failure, suffering bruises. The injury occurred when the compromised front wheel caused loss of stroller control.
Front Wheel Bearing Failures
Bearings in the front wheel fork assemblies fail during normal use. Failed bearings restrict wheel rotation or detach completely, eliminating steering control.
Bearings Wear Through Housing
Defective bearings grind against the housing material, wearing completely through the metal. Once bearings penetrate the housing, they separate from the wheel assembly.
Recalled Models and SKUs
The recall covers Zoom 360 Ultralight jogging strollers with SKU numbers 8060, 8061, 8067, and 8069. Only units with batch numbers between March 2020 (03-XX-20) and October 2020 (10-XX-20) are included in the recall.
Colors and Weight
The recalled strollers were sold in black, blueberry, charcoal, and red colors, weighing approximately 26 pounds. The stroller label on the inside leg contains the SKU and batch numbers.
Sold May 2020 Through December 2020
Affected strollers were sold at independent specialty juvenile stores nationwide and online at Joovy.com, Amazon.com, BuyBuyBaby.com, and Target.com for approximately $250. An 8-month sales period distributed 9,200 defective strollers to families.
Free Repair Kit Remedy
Joovy provides free repair kits to replace the front wheel fork bearing. Consumers should stop using recalled strollers immediately and contact zoom360@joovy.com or 800-495-8718.
Users Fall When Wheels Fail
Sudden bearing failures cause jogging strollers to stop abruptly or collapse forward. Users running or walking with strollers fall when the front wheel malfunctions unexpectedly.
Children Fall From Strollers
Front wheel failures cause strollers to tip or stop suddenly, throwing children from seats. Impact injuries include head trauma, fractures, and lacerations from falls onto pavement.
Loss of Steering Control
Restricted or detached front wheels eliminate the ability to steer the strollers. Uncontrollable strollers veer into traffic, obstacles, or off paths creating collision hazards.
Design Defect in Bearing Assembly
Front wheel bearing assemblies that fail during normal use are defectively designed. Jogging stroller bearings must withstand the stresses of running, uneven terrain, and extended use without failing.
Manufacturing Defect in Bearings
Bearings manufactured between March 2020 and October 2020 contain systematic defects causing premature failure. Defective bearing production demonstrates inadequate quality control during the manufacturing process.
Inadequate Material Selection
Housing materials unable to withstand bearing stress are inadequate for jogging stroller applications. Proper engineering requires materials that prevent bearing wear-through under normal operating conditions.
Failure to Test Under Real-World Conditions
Joovy failed to adequately test bearing assemblies under jogging and running conditions before sale. Reasonable testing requires simulating thousands of miles of use on varied terrain to identify bearing failures.
Breach of Implied Warranty
Joovy breached implied warranties by selling jogging strollers with front wheel assemblies that fail during normal use. Strollers that cannot be safely jogged fail fitness requirements for their intended purpose.
Negligent Product Design and Testing
Selling jogging strollers without adequate bearing testing constitutes negligence. Manufacturers must thoroughly test safety-critical components like wheel assemblies before marketing to families with young children.
Violation of Stroller Safety Standards
Defective wheel bearings likely violate ASTM F833 stroller safety standards requiring reliable wheel assemblies. Standards mandate wheels remain securely attached and functional during reasonably foreseeable use.
