Latest Updates

On July 15, 2015, Double Insight Inc. of Canada announced a voluntary recall of its Instant Pot “Smart” and “Smart-60” electric pressure cookers in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) [1]. An additional 140 units were sold in Canada. The recalled pressure cookers were manufactured in China and imported by Double Insight Inc.

What Products Are Affected?

The recall covers the Instant Pot “Smart” and “Smart-60” electric pressure cookers — stainless steel units with black molded plastic attachments, a front-facing control panel and keypad, and Bluetooth connectivity that allows control through a smartphone app. The cookers measure approximately 12 inches in diameter and 12 inches tall, with “Instant Pot” and “Smart” printed on the front of the control panel.

Only units with serial numbers between 1410 and 1503 and manufacture dates between December 1, 2014 and June 1, 2015 are included in the recall. The serial number and manufacture date are printed on a label on the bottom of the pressure cooker’s base. The recalled cookers were sold online at Instantpot.com and Amazon.com from November 2014 through May 2015 for approximately $250.

What Is the Hazard?

The thermal probe in the recalled cooker’s base can conduct electricity throughout the unit, posing a risk of electric shock to the consumer during use. An electric shock from a kitchen appliance filled with hot, pressurized contents presents a serious and potentially life-threatening hazard.

Incidents and Injuries

Double Insight received three reports from consumers who were shocked while using the recalled Instant Pot Smart pressure cooker. No further details regarding the severity of those injuries were provided in the CPSC recall notice.

Consumers who own a recalled Instant Pot Smart or Smart-60 pressure cooker should stop using it immediately. Double Insight is providing a free replacement base — which includes the entire bottom of the pressure cooker and the control panel — and is contacting all known purchasers directly.
