On October 26, 2023, Best Buy Purchasing LLC of Richfield, Minnesota announced a voluntary recall of Insignia Multi-Function Pressure Cookers in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) [1]. This recall was subsequently updated on March 25, 2025. The cookers were manufactured in China and imported by Best Buy Purchasing LLC.
What Products Are Affected?
The recall covers three Insignia Multi-Function Pressure Cooker models — stainless steel units with black accents displaying the INSIGNIA brand name on the front and on the permanent on-product label on the side. The following models are included in the recall:
- Insignia 6-Quart Multi-Function Pressure Cooker — Model NS-MC60SS8
- Insignia 6-Quart Multi-Function Pressure Cooker — Model NS-MC60SS9
- Insignia 8-Quart Multi-Function Pressure Cooker — Model NS-MC80SS9
The recall also covers two Insignia inner cooker pots sold separately as replacement parts — Model NS-MCRP6NS9 and Model NS-MCRP6SS9 — which are black with a non-stick coating and embossed cup and liter measurement markings. The recalled pressure cookers and inner pots were sold at Best Buy stores nationwide and online at Bestbuy.com and Amazon.com from October 2017 through June 2023 for between $50 and $120.
What Is the Hazard?
The inner pot on the recalled pressure cookers has incorrect volume markings — a labeling defect that causes consumers to unknowingly overfill the pot beyond safe pressure-cooking capacity. When an overfilled pressure cooker is vented using the quick release method or opened while still pressurized, hot food and liquids can be forcefully ejected, posing a serious burn hazard to anyone nearby.
Incidents and Injuries
Best Buy received 31 reports of hot contents being expelled under pressure from the recalled cookers. Those incidents resulted in 17 burn injuries, some of which involved second-degree burns and severe burns.
What Should Consumers Do?
Consumers who own a recalled Insignia pressure cooker should immediately stop using it and contact Best Buy for a free replacement inner pot and floating locking valve — the two components at the center of the defect. Until the replacement parts are received and installed, the cooker should not be used.
