Update: Daimler Recalls Sprinter Vans for Brake Hose Defect
The NHTSA on Nov. 24, 2020, announced a recall for certain 2020 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter vans that were equipped with brake hoses on the front and rear axles which may have been damaged during production. These hoses could begin to leak brake fluid, affecting the braking performance of the vehicle, including the potential loss of directional stability when braking, increasing the risk of a crash, NHTSA said. Daimler’s number for this recall is VS3MONTLAU.
What’s the Problem?
This NHTSA Recall was issued in July 2020 and affects:
- 2019 Freightliner Sprinter Van (platform 970 (VS30) equipped with swivel seats
- 2019 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Van equipped with swivel seats
These vans were fitted with wiring harnesses for the front seats that may have been routed incorrectly and could become jammed and damaged in the swivel seat frames, according to the NHTSA.
If the wiring harness is damaged, the side airbag within the seat may deploy inadvertently or not deploy as designed in the event of a crash, increasing the risk of injury to vehicle occupants.
Consumers who purchased a van that is affected by this recall should stop using it immediately and contact their dealership to schedule a free inspection and repair.
