On August 22, 2026, Everything Sprouts, LLC of Minneapolis, Minnesota announced a voluntary recall of certain lots of alfalfa sprouts due to potential contamination with Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) and Salmonella bacteria. The FDA published the recall announcement the same day [1]. As of the recall date, 55 illness reports related to alfalfa sprouts had been received by federal and state public health partners.
What Products Are Affected?
The recall covers alfalfa sprouts and sprout mix products sold in 5 oz plastic containers under the Everything Sprouts and Calco brand names. The affected products, UPCs, and lot numbers are:

The recalled products were distributed from May 27, 2026 through August 21, 2026 to wholesale distributors and grocery stores in Minnesota and Wisconsin.
What Is the Hazard?
The recalled alfalfa sprouts have the potential to be contaminated with two distinct and serious pathogens simultaneously: Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC) — including strains O26:H11, O103:H25, and O168:H8 — and Salmonella. STEC can cause acute bloody diarrhea within days of ingestion and, in a subset of patients — particularly children under 5, the elderly, and immunocompromised individuals — can progress to hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), a life-threatening condition characterized by kidney failure, red blood cell breakdown, and low platelet counts that can be fatal.
Salmonella infection causes nausea, vomiting, and abdominal cramps typically beginning 6 to 72 hours after exposure. In vulnerable populations, Salmonella can enter the bloodstream and cause arterial infections, endocarditis, and septic arthritis.
Incidents and Injuries
As of the August 22, 2026 recall announcement, 55 illness reports linked to alfalfa sprouts have been received by federal and state public health partners. Everything Sprouts states it is continuing to work closely with public health officials to investigate the source of the contamination.
What Should Consumers Do?
Consumers who purchased any of the recalled Everything Sprouts or Calco alfalfa sprout products should not eat them and should immediately discard them. All surfaces, containers, and utensils that may have come into contact with the recalled sprouts should be carefully cleaned and sanitized — both STEC and Salmonella can survive on surfaces and spread to other foods.
