Latest Updates

The CPSC issued Recall #27-016 on October 8, 2026, as a Fast Track recall, warning that grass and debris accumulation in the mowers can ignite, creating fire and burn hazards capable of causing serious injury or death [1]. DR Power Equipment had received 19 reports of the mowers catching fire before the recall was announced, with two incidents resulting in minor injuries — blisters on the hands and feet of the operators [2]. The CPSC’s Fast Track designation reflects the company’s cooperation with the recall process and its agreement to provide a free repair kit to all affected consumers [3].

A Fire Hazard That Develops During Normal Use

Trimmer mowers are designed to cut through dense vegetation — tall grass, weeds, and brush — in areas that standard rotary mowers cannot reach. The cutting action that makes them effective in heavy vegetation is precisely what generates the accumulation of dry grass clippings and debris that the CPSC has identified as an ignition risk in these DR Power models.

The hazard is not the result of misuse or operator error: it arises from the normal operating conditions the mower was engineered to handle. A consumer using a recalled DR Pilot or Premier to clear an overgrown field or maintain a fence line is generating the exact debris accumulation that can ignite — with no visible warning before the fire event occurs.

Operators Standing Directly Behind a Burning Machine

Trimmer mowers are walk-behind units — the operator follows closely behind the machine while it operates, typically at arm’s length or less. When a fire event occurs in a walk-behind trimmer mower, the operator is in immediate proximity to the ignition source, with burning grass clippings and debris present at foot and leg level in addition to whatever flames develop in the mower’s housing.

The two injuries already reported — blisters on the hands and feet — are consistent with the operator’s physical position relative to the machine during a fire event. Burns to the hands and feet represent the closest contact points between an operator walking behind the mower and a fire originating in the cutting deck area.

Nearly Four Years on the Market Before Recall

The recalled Pilot and Premier models were sold from November 2022 through July 2026 — a period of nearly four years during which approximately 42,860 units reached consumers through hardware retailers and direct online sales. Trimmer mowers are seasonal equipment that typically sees the heaviest use during spring and summer months, meaning units sold in early 2023 may have already completed three or four full cutting seasons before the recall was announced.

Consumers who purchased these mowers at Ace, TSC, Bomgaars, or through independent power equipment dealers — or who received them as part of a property purchase or equipment transfer — may not receive direct recall notification and will only learn of the hazard if they encounter the CPSC notice through other means.

Reported Injuries

DR Power Equipment reported 19 incidents of the recalled trimmer mowers catching fire before the October 8, 2026 recall announcement. Two of those incidents resulted in injuries to the operators, described as blisters on the hands and feet — injuries consistent with brief, direct exposure to fire or hot surfaces during a mower fire event.

Can I File a Lawsuit?
