On March 1, 2018, Double Insight Inc. of Canada announced a voluntary recall of the Gem 65 8-in-1 Multicooker in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) [1]. The multicookers were manufactured by Foshan Linshine Technology Co. of Guangdong, China and imported by Double Insight Inc.
What Product Is Affected?
The recall covers the Gem 65 8-in-1 Multicooker — a multifunctional, programmable cooking appliance with the functions of roasting, baking, stewing, slow cooking, rice cooking, searing and sautéing, steaming, and food warming. “Instant Pot” is printed on the front of the multicooker, and “Gem 65 8-in-1” along with the batch code are printed on the rating label on the underside of the product.
Only units with one of the following batch codes printed on the underside label are included in the recall: 1728, 1730, 1731, 1734, or 1746. The recalled multicookers were sold exclusively at Walmart stores nationwide and online at Walmart.com from August 2017 through January 2018 for approximately $80.
What Is the Hazard?
A manufacturer defect can cause the Gem 65 8-in-1 Multicooker to overheat and melt on its underside, posing a serious fire hazard. An overheating appliance sitting on a kitchen counter — particularly one left unattended during extended cooking cycles — can ignite surrounding cabinetry, countertop materials, or other nearby items before the user is aware of the danger.
Incidents and Injuries
Double Insight received 107 reports of the recalled multicooker overheating, five of which resulted in minor property damage. No injuries were reported in connection with the recall.
What Should Consumers Do?
Consumers who own a recalled Gem 65 8-in-1 Multicooker should stop using it immediately and unplug the unit. Consumers have two remedy options: return the unit to any Walmart store for a full refund, or contact Double Insight directly to receive a free replacement multicooker.
