A Long List of Brands, One Common Defect

What unites these otherwise unrelated brands is not shared ownership or manufacturing, but a shared design: an open container into which liquid alcohol fuel is poured and then ignited in that same spot.
That design has produced remarkably consistent injury patterns across brands with nothing else in common. Whether a fire pit is sold under a recognizable name or an obscure storefront brand like CHGBOWZ, the underlying mechanism that injures consumers — pool fires and flame jetting — does not change.
How the Injuries Happen
Tabletop fire pits like the ones CHGBOWZ sells typically use pooled isopropyl alcohol or similar liquid fuel that burns at temperatures exceeding 1,600°F, hot enough to cause severe burns in less than one second [1]. Pool fires created inside these open-container fire pits can produce sudden, uncontrollable flames that spread beyond the product onto nearby users and bystanders.
Flame jetting is the second and more violent hazard — an explosion caused when liquid fuel is poured near an existing small flame still burning in the bowl. Because that flame can be nearly impossible to see, refueling a fire pit that appears extinguished can trigger an explosion that propels burning liquid and invisible flames outward toward anyone standing nearby.
The Federal Government’s Response
In December 2024, the CPSC issued a consumer alert urging consumers to immediately stop using alcohol-burning fire pits and sellers to stop selling them, citing two deaths and at least 60 injuries reported since 2019 [1]. The agency specifically found that fire pits requiring consumers to pour liquid fuel into an open container and ignite it in the same location violate the requirements of voluntary safety standard ASTM F3363-19.
That alert followed an earlier CPSC warning about FLIKRFIRE Tabletop Fireplaces and the recall of Colsen-branded tabletop fire pits. Even after the December 2024 alert, online retailers continued selling similar products — in November 2025, the CPSC recalled more than 18,000 bottles of MoonSoll and Magic Chems ethanol fireplace fuel sold on Amazon, more than six months after the original consumer alert was issued [2].
Injuries Reported Across the Category
Victims of tabletop fire pit incidents have reported first-, second-, and third-degree burns, with many requiring emergency medical treatment, skin grafting, and long-term wound care. Additional reported injuries include permanent scarring, nerve damage, reduced mobility, and breathing injuries caused by sudden fire eruptions.
Lawsuits Filed Nationwide
Consumers across the United States are filing claims against manufacturers and sellers of tabletop fire pits, alleging the products are dangerously defective and have caused serious burn injuries and, in some cases, death. Because these claims focus on the shared design defect rather than any single brand’s manufacturing process, consumers burned by lesser-known brands like CHGBOWZ may have claims just as strong as those involving more recognizable names.
