What’s the Problem?
FDA announced the ByHeart Infant Formula Recall on December 11, 2022, warning parents to stop feeding babies the potentially contaminated baby formula immediately.
The recall affects 5 batches of ByHeart Whole Nutrition Infant Formula Milk Based Powder with Iron for 0-12 Months. The formula was canned and distributed in 24 ounce containers and was sold directly to consumers.
The recalled ByHeart Infant Formula canisters are marked with a batch number located on the bottom of the can printed with use by date of January 1, 2024 or July 1, 2024 (shown as 01 JAN 24 or 01JUL 24). Batch numbers included in the recall are:
- 22273 C1
- 22276 C1
- 22277 C1
- 22278 C1
- 22280 C1
ByHeart ordered the recall after a sample of the company’s Infant Formula Milk Based Powder with Iron tested positive for Cronobacter sakazakii, a rare germ that lives in dry environments. Signs and symptoms of a Cronobacter sakazakii infection in babies include:
- Fever, crying, and irritability
- Poor feeding, stomach pain, or vomiting
- Blood in the bowel movements, or a swollen abdomen
- Seizures, jaundice (yellow eyes or skin), or grunting when breathing
Although ByHeart had not received any reports of infant formula causing Cronobacter sakazakii infections at the time of the FDA Recall Notice, the company is warning of possible cross-contamination issues during the manufacturing process that could have introduced the bacteria into the formula.
ByHeart said all of the infant formula that was packaged on the day the Cronobacter sakazakii sample was collected, and that the first production batch on the following day were isolated and destroyed.
Customers should check the bottom of the can and discard any recalled products immediately or return them to the point of purchase for a refund. ByHeart announced customers will be provided 2 free cans of alternative formula on their next order.
