Update: Casa Kids Recalls Bunk Beds Over Fall Risk
The CPSC on March 4, 2021, announced that Casa Collection Design Group Inc. is recalling about 200 Cabina Bunk Beds over concerns that “the screws that hold the bed’s mattress foundation to the bed’s guardrails can be loose and the mattress foundation can fall, posing a fall risk to children in the bunk bed,” CPSC said. This recall was initiated after Casa Kids received at least 9 reports that some of the screws that hold the bed’s foundation to the bed’s guardrails were spinning loose. In 1 case, the foundation on 1 lower bed dislodged from 1 of its 2 bed rails. The CPSC Recall Number for these beds is 21-725.
What’s the Problem?
This CPSC Recall began on November 12, 2020, and affects the following models of Zinus metal bunk beds, which were sold online from December 2016 through January 2020 for between $90 and $240:
- Model OPLBB — Black twin-over-twin bed whose bed posts have a square cross section.
- Model RPBB — Blue twin-over-twin bed whose bed posts have a circular cross section.
- Model NTBB — Gray twin-over-full bed whose bed posts have a circular cross section.
CPSC is aware of at least 13 reports of the bunk bed welds coming apart including 3 reports of multiple welds simultaneously failing. Of the 13 reports, 3 resulted in bumps and bruises after the consumer fell to the floor from the upper bunk when the welds failed.
Affected bunk beds have ladders built into both the head and foot of the bed. The model number is printed on a label on the horizontal bar of the guard rail of the upper bunk.
Consumers who purchased a recalled bunk bed should stop using it immediately and contact Zinus Inc. for a free repair kit with reinforcement brackets or a full refund.
