Update: Brompton Electric Bikes Recalled Over Crash, Injury Hazards

Brompton is recalling about 2,230 Brompton Electric Folding Bicycles over concerns that the mudguard is positioned too close to the front wheel which can cause the wheel to lock up leading to sudden deceleration of the bike if an object gets caught between the mudguard and front tire, posing crash and injury hazards to the rider.

The firm has received 10 reports of faulty mudguards causing the bikes to crash, resulting in nine reports of injuries, including head and facial impact, broken bones, shoulder dislocation, bruising, and chipped teeth and two reports of hospitalizations,” CPSC said.

This recall affects the Brompton Electric M2L, H2L, M6L, and H6L which are printed on the bicycles name plate, which is affixed to the bottom of the seat-post facing rearwards.

The recalled bikes were sold online and at Brompton bicycle retailers from May 2019 through March 2022 for between $3,500 and $3,800.

This recall began on June 9, 2022.

What’s the Problem?

This CPSC Recall began on April 21, 2021, and affects about 600 Brompton Electric Folding Bicycles with a 3 section folding frame and 16-inch wheels.

“The firm has received one report of a software issue that caused a bicycle to provide continued assistance when the rider had stopped pedaling,” CPSC said.

Affected bicycles were sold in black, white, Turkish green & bolt lacquer. The serial number is printed on a label on the frame of the bicycle. Click here to view a complete list of serial numbers included in the recall.

The recalled bikes were sold at the Brompton Junction Store in New York and authorized Brompton Electric Dealers nationwide from June 2020 through March 2021 for between $3,500 and $3,800.

Consumers who purchased a recalled folding bike should stop using it immediately and contact their local Brompton Electric dealer for a free software upgrade to Version 1-2-10-2.

The CPSC Recall Number for this item is 21-116.
