These BMWs contain a top child seat tether anchor on the rear middle seat that may not be readily accessible, which makes the vehicles fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 225, Section 6.1(b) “Child Restraint Anchorage Systems.”
A child restraint system placed on the car’s rear middle seat without utilizing the 3-point safety belt could increase the risk of injury or death to children in the event of a crash, NHTSA said.
If you purchased a BMW that is affected by this recall, you should contact your dealer for a free repair. BMW will install a top tether anchor cover at the rear middle seating position, free of charge.
