What’s the Problem?
This CPSC Recall began on March 21, 2021, and affects about 1,400 Beal Birdie Belay Devices used to protect rock climbers while climbing.
“The firm has received three reports of the user being unable to lower the climber because the hand lever became detached from the device,” CPSC said. “No injuries have been reported.”
Affected climbing belays were sold with an orange, blue, or green handle, and have the batch year “/19” on the side of the unit.
The recalled belays were sold online, at REI stores, outdoor equipment stores and indoor rock climbing gyms nationwide from July 2019 through February 2021 for about $75.
Consumers who purchased a recalled climbing belay should stop using it immediately and contact Liberty Mountain for a free replacement.
