May 2, 2026 – The a2 Milk Company of Boulder, Colorado recalled three batches of a2 Platinum Premium infant formula 0-12 months USA label sold through a2MC’s website, Amazon, and Meijer stores from an unknown start date through December 31, 2025 due to cereulide toxin contamination. The 31.7-ounce tins with batch numbers 2210269454, 2210324609, and 2210321712 totaled 63,078 units, with approximately 16,428 sold to consumers before the product was discontinued [1].
Cereulide Toxin Contamination
Cereulide is a heat-stable toxin produced by certain strains of Bacillus cereus bacteria. Hot water used to prepare formula does not eliminate this toxin, meaning standard bottle preparation offers no protection.
Symptoms Within Hours
Illness typically develops 30 minutes to six hours after consumption. Symptoms include nausea and vomiting that usually self-resolve within 24 hours in healthy adults.
Infants at Greater Risk
Infants face higher risk due to developing immune systems. Complications include dehydration requiring medical care, particularly dangerous for babies unable to communicate discomfort.
Three Recalled Batches
Batch 2210269454 expires July 15, 2026, while batches 2210324609 and 2210321712 expire January 21 and January 15, 2027 respectively. Batch numbers and Use By dates appear on the bottom of each tin.
Over 16,000 Units Sold
Of 63,078 total units in the three batches, approximately 16,428 reached consumers before the recall. Thousands of families may have contaminated formula in their homes.
Operation Fly Formula Distribution
The product distributed nationally as part of Operation Fly Formula, a federal program addressing formula shortages. Government efforts to increase formula availability inadvertently distributed contaminated product.
New Zealand Regulatory Trigger
The recall followed new guidance from New Zealand’s food regulatory authority prompting additional testing. Without that international regulatory change, cereulide contamination might have remained undetected.
Contaminated Ingredient Source
The probable cereulide source is an ingredient in the formula. This suggests upstream supplier contamination rather than a2MC’s manufacturing process.
No Confirmed Illnesses Yet
No confirmed illness or harm reports had been received as of the recall announcement. However, vomiting and nausea in infants may be attributed to other causes, potentially masking toxin-related illness.
Product Discontinued
The a2 Milk Company discontinued the product and removed it from sale before initiating the recall. Importation rights expired December 31, 2025, ending this product line entirely.
USA Label Specificity
Only the USA label version for infants 0-12 months is recalled. The company’s other infant formula products sold in different markets are not affected.
Milk-Based Powder with Iron
The recalled formula is milk-based powder fortified with iron in 31.7-ounce tins. Parents chose this product believing they were providing premium nutrition for their babies.
Amazon and Meijer Sales
Major retailers Amazon and Meijer stores distributed the contaminated formula nationwide. The broad retail distribution means affected families span the entire United States.
Bacillus Cereus Bacteria
Bacillus cereus commonly contaminates rice, dairy products, and vegetables. Some strains produce cereulide toxin that survives cooking and reheating.
Disposal Instructions
Consumers should immediately discontinue use and dispose of affected formula or return it for refunds. The company provides no specific disposal guidance for the contaminated product.
Refund Process
Parents can return product to the place of purchase for refunds. For purchases through a2MC’s website, consumers should contact the company at 1-844-422-6455.
Contact an Attorney
If your infant became ill with vomiting, nausea, dehydration, or required medical care after consuming a2 Platinum infant formula, contact a product liability attorney immediately. Preserve the formula tin with batch number and expiration date visible, save all medical records documenting illness and treatment including ER visits and hospitalization, keep purchase receipts from Amazon, Meijer, or a2MC’s website, and document the timeline of formula feeding and symptom onset.
