What’s the problem?
The dehumidifier fire occurred in the basement of a single-family home on the 800 block of Karl Street in Allouez on March 26, 2017. When fire crews arrived, they found smoke and a small amount of fire.
All residents had already evacuated the residence and the fire was extinguished without incident. One person was taken to the hospital for injuries associated with the fire.
Damage was estimated at $8,000. It is still unclear whether the dehumidifier suspected of causing the fire was part of a massive recall issued in November by Gree, which involved approximately 2.5 million dehumidifiers sold under the following names: Danby, De’Longhi, Fedders, Fellini, Frigidaire, GE, Gree, Kenmore, Norpole, Premiere, Seabreeze, SoleusAir and SuperClima.
Also in November, GD Midea issued a recall for about 3.4 million humidifiers in the U.S. and Canada after the appliances were linked to at least 38 fires and nearly $5 million in property damage.
CPSC has issued separate recalls for millions of other dehumidifiers in recent years after numerous reports of overheating and at least 121 fires.
