Schmidt & Clark, LLP is currently investigating Versa-1 lawsuits involving serious, life-threatening injuries, including acute hepatitis (liver inflammation), hepatotoxicity, and liver failure. Versa-1 is a bodybuilding supplement that contains a controversial ingredient called aegeline, which the FDA has warned may be associated with an epidemic of liver damage.

Versa-1 Class Action Lawsuit

What is Versa-1?

Versa-1 is marketed as a pre-workout performance-enhancing dietary supplement. The manufacturers claim its “all natural” formula will boost energy, burn fat, build muscle, reduce appetite, and enhance male sexual function. The product is sold online and in retail stores for $35-50.

Versa-1 Ingredient List

  • Aegeline (N-[2-hydroxy-2(4-methoxyphenyl) ethyl]-3-phenyl-2-propenamide)
  • Citicoline (or Cytidine 5’-diphoscholine)
  • Modified starch
  • Gelatin
  • Vegetable stearate
  • Silicon dioxide

FDA Warning for Versa-1 and Liver Damage

Versa-1 is manufactured by USPLabs, LLC, the Dallas-based company that also sells OxyElite Pro. On October 11, 2013, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) sent USPLabs a Warning Letter for Versa-1 because it contains aegeline, an ingredient that is not approved for use in supplements.

The FDA considers aegeline “adulterated,” and therefore illegal in Versa-1 and other dietary supplements. According to the FDA:

“FDA is aware of no history of use or other evidence of safety establishing that aegeline will reasonably be expected to be safe when used under the conditions recommended or suggested in the labeling of OxyElite Pro and Versa-1.”

Aegeline and Liver Failure

USPLabs claims that aegeline, an ingredient in Versa-1, is an “all-natural” extract of the bael plant. In early 2013, the company used aegeline to re-formulate OxyElite Pro. Soon afterward, OxyElite Pro was associated with over 50 liver injuries. Several victims needed liver transplants, and one person died. OxyElite Pro was recalled after the FDA published evidence supporting a “causal connection” between the supplement and liver failure.

Symptoms of Liver Damage

  • Nausea, vomiting
  • Elevated liver enzymes in blood tests
  • Pain or tenderness in the upper-right side of the abdomen
  • Loss of appetite
  • Jaundice (yellow discoloration of skin, eyes)
  • Tiredness
  • Confusion or disorientation
  • Mild fever
  • And more
