Jennie-O Recalls 91,000 Pounds of Turkey for Salmonella
November 19, 2018 – The first brand name involved in the nationwide salmonella outbreak linked to raw turkey has been revealed as Jennie-O, which recalled more than 91,000 pounds of turkey on Thursday, according to the FSIS. The recalled turkey was distributed in 1-pound packages to retailers across the U.S. Consumers who purchased these products are urged not to eat them, and to either discard them immediately or return them to the point of purchase for a full refund.
What’s the problem?
The USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) has yet to determine the source of the outbreak, saying it would be irresponsible to prematurely link innocent parties to the problem in the name of a timely response. FSIS denies the claim by some consumer rights advocates that government secrecy is putting the public’s health at risk.
Consumer Reports is claiming that the FSIS investigation has identified the same strain of Salmonella Reading in at least 22 slaughterhouses and 7 processing facilities, but have withheld all findings from the public to date.
The incubation period for salmonella bacteria ranges anywhere from 2 hours to several days. Most salmonella infections can be classified as stomach flu (gastroenteritis). Signs and symptoms of salmonellosis include:
- Abdominal cramps
- Blood in the stool
In most otherwise healthy adults, these symptoms tend to taper off within a week without medical intervention. Those at an increased risk for severe infections include babies, old folks, and people who have impaired immune systems.
