What’s the Problem?

April 25, 2017 – Plaintiff claims that his wife suffered a gastrointestinal bleed and other severe complications less than one month after she started taking Eliquis in Feb. 2015 for the treatment of her atrial fibrillation. She was initially treated at a hospital but later died of her injuries, according to the lawsuit.

Eliquis is used to prevent blood clots in the veins after a hip or knee replacement surgery. Most patients who undergo these surgeries are less active for a period of time while they recover. This can cause blood flow to slow down, which increases the risk of a blood clot.

Like other newer generation oral blood-thinners like Pradaxa (generic: dabigatran) and Xarelto (generic: rivaroxaban), Eliquis has been linked to an increased risk of uncontrolled bleeding (hemorrhaging). This is because the drug prevents stroke by inhibiting the blood clotting mechanism.

Warfarin, an older blood-thinner that’s been in use for more than a half-century in the U.S., also prevents blood from clotting; however, the medicine’s effects can be reversed with vitamin K. No such antidote exists with Eliquis, so once bleeding begins in patients who use the drug, it is difficult if not impossible to stop.

Plaintiff alleges that Bristol-Myers Squibb and Pfizer failed to adequately warn about the health risks of Eliquis before bringing it to market, and failed to conduct appropriate clinical trials to ensure the drug’s safety and efficacy.

The lawsuit was filed on March 2, 2017, in the Superior Court of the State of Delaware. Plaintiff is seeking both compensatory and punitive damages.
