Skipanon Brand Seafoods LLC is recalling all lots and sizes of its canned seafood products because they may be contaminated with Clostridium botulinum, a bacterium that causes life-threatening foodborne illness.

October 9, 2015 – According to the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA), seafood included this recall was distributed to wholesalers and retailers in Michigan, Nevada, Oregon and Washington, as well as sold online. The following affected products are packaged in metal containers with net weights ranging from 5.5 oz to 66.5 oz., and contain production codes starting with “OC”:

Botulism Symptoms

Signs and symptoms of foodborne botulism typically begin between 12 and 36 hours after Clostridium botulinum is ingested, according to the Mayo Clinic. However, the onset of symptoms can range from a few hours to several days, depending on the amount of toxin that has gotten into the person’s body. Signs may include:

  • Difficulty swallowing or speaking
  • Dry mouth
  • Facial weakness on both sides of the face
  • Blurred or double vision
  • Drooping eyelids
  • Trouble breathing
  • Nausea, vomiting and abdominal cramps
  • Paralysis
