What’s the Problem?

October 10, 2016 – Samsung said it was “adjusting shipping volumes” for Galaxy Note 7 phones in order to conduct in-depth inspections and to improve quality control, according to CNBC. The decision to halt production followed reports that all 4 major U.S. carriers — Verizon, AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile — have stopped exchanging or selling new Samsung Note 7 phones.
Problems with Note 7 replacement models add to a global scandal that has severely affected the reputation of Samsung, South Korea’s largest and most profitable company. It also could add new dangers for consumers.
On September 2, Samsung announced a global recall of 2.5 million Note 7s in 10 markets including the U.S. over allegedly defective batteries that have caused some of the phones to catch fire.
A Southwest Airline flight was evacuated at Louisville International Airport last week after a replacement Note 7 phone began smoking inside the plane, according to CNN. Customers in China and South Korea have reported similar incidents with replacement devices.
Airlines in Australia and Singapore have restricted passengers from using or charging the devices during flights. An investigation launched in response to dozens of consumer complaints about Samsung phones catching fire identified a potential battery flaw that affects about 1 in 42,000 units.
