What’s the Problem?

June 12, 2018 – On Friday, Caito Foods recalled fresh cut watermelon, honeydew melon, cantaloupe and fresh-cut fruit medley products containing these melons produced at their plant in Indianapolis, Indiana, according to the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA).

Salmonella illnesses linked to the melons have been reported in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Missouri and Ohio. CDC said the recalled melons were also sold in Georgia, Kentucky, and North Carolina, but no illnesses have been reported yet in those states.

Affected products were sold in clear, plastic containers at Costco, Jay C, Kroger, Payless, Owen’s, Sprouts, Trader Joe’s, Walgreens, Walmart, and Whole Foods/Amazon.

Caito Foods is investigating to determine whether the recalled fruits were distributed to any additional stores or states.

Symptoms of salmonella typically begin to manifest between 12 and 72 hours after consuming contaminated food, according to the CDC. These symptoms include:

  • Fever
  • Diarrhea
  • Bloody stools
  • Stomach cramps
  • Malaise (general bad feeling)
  • Cold / chills
  • Throwing up

Symptoms of the infection usually last up to 1 week, and most people recover without treatment, according to the CDC. In some people, however, the diarrhea may be so severe that the patient needs to hospitalized.
