Update: Figueroa to Stand Trial on Child Sex Abuse Charges
August 8, 2017 – Fernando Figueroa, a former teacher’s aid at Riverside Elementary School in California, has been ordered to stand trial on 8 felony charges involving sexual acts on children, according to the Press Enterprise. Figueroa has been charged with 7 counts of lewd acts on a child under 14 years old and 1 count of oral copulation on a child under 10, with a sentence-enhancing allegation of targeting multiple children. He is currently being held in lieu of $4 million bail, and scheduled to return to court Aug. 22 for a post-preliminary hearing arraignment.
What’s the Problem?
February 22, 2017 – A female student at Liberty Elementary School accused Fernando Figueroa, 24, of Riverside of touching her “in a sexual manner,” according to NBC Los Angeles.
A subsequent investigation revealed at least 3 additional victims. Riverside police said all of the victims were younger than 10.
Figueroa was placed on administrative leave and has been restricted from all Riverside Unified School District schools until the investigation is completed.
Police say Figueroa also worked at an after-school program at the Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Redlands-Riverside, and it is believed there are more victims there. Figueroa has been placed on indefinite leave and barred from that facility.
Figueroa had worked at Liberty Elementary since August 2015, where he was paid $16.65 an hour to teach and assist students and staff to use computers and other electronics. He was a tutor with the school district from February to August 2015, according to district spokesman Justin Grayson.
In a letter posted on the school’s website, Liberty Principal Esther Garcia said that Figueroa was a part-time employee and had passed a federal background check.
Detectives served a search warrant at Figueroa’s home in the 5000 block of La Sierra Avenue and arrested him on suspicion of oral copulation with a child younger than 10, lewd acts with a child younger than 14 and being a sex offender of multiple victims.
He was booked into the Robert Presley Detention Center, where bail was set at $4 million.
