What’s the Problem?
January 17, 2018 – Plaintiff in the case, Timothy Stange, was just 12-years-old when doctors prescribed him Risperdal to treat his Tourette’s syndrome in 2006, according to the lawsuit. Stange claims he felt a stabbing pain in his nipple the following year but continued to take the drug until 2009. Two years later, he was diagnosed with gynecomastia, a condition that causes abnormal breast growth in boys and young men.
Risperdal is an antipsychotic medicine that was first approved by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) in 1993 for the treatment of schizophrenia. In 2006, the drug was approved to treat symptoms of autism in pediatric and adolescent populations.
Stange endured years of teasing from his classmates before undergoing a double mastectomy at age 18 to have his breasts removed, according to the lawsuit. He later joined a class action lawsuit involving more than 5,500 former Risperdal users across the U.S. who claim to have developed abnormal breast growth from the medicine.
His case was heard in Pennsylvania Superior Court in 2015, with the jury awarding him more than $500,000 in compensatory damages. Then, earlier this month, a judicial panel ruled that Stange could also be awarded punitive damages for his gynecomastia.
