Update: Chicken Salad Sold at Fareway Linked to Salmonella Outbreak
March 8, 2018 – A rare outbreak of Salmonella Typhimurium that has sickened 170 people in 7 states has been linked to chicken salad sold at Fareway grocery stores in Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, and South Dakota. The recalled products were produced by Triple T Specialty Meats Inc., and sold from January 4 to February 9, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
What’s the Problem?
February 24, 2017 – The USDA announced Wednesday that three Ready Pac Foods plants are recalling 59,225 pounds of Puro Picante Blazin’ Hot chicken salad product that may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, a bacterium that causes severe food poisoning illness.
Products affected by this recall include:
- 7.5-oz. single serve salad bowl packages of “Ready Pac Foods Puro Picante Blazin Hot” with Use By Dates of 01/31/17 through 03/04/2017.
These salads were produced between Jan. 17 and Feb. 1, 2017, and bear establishment number P-27497, P-32081, or P-18502B inside the USDA mark of inspection. Affected products were shipped to retail establishments nationwide.
The problem was discovered Tuesday after Ready Pac Foods was notified by its cheese supplier that the cheese used in the chicken salad products was included in an expanded cheese recall implicated in a nationwide listeria outbreak.
To date, there have been no confirmed reports of adverse reactions to Ready Pac salads. However, USDA and Ready Pac are concerned that some of the recalled product may still be in consumers’ refrigerators. Consumers who have purchased these products should discard them immediately or return them to the place of purchase for a full refund.
