What’s the Problem?
September 12, 2017 – The U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) issued a recall notice Sunday, after federal investigators traced an infected sample of Maradol papayas to shipments the company imported from a packer in Tijuana.
The salmonella outbreak is 1 of 4 that have sickened more than 200 people in 23 states since late last year, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Earlier outbreaks killed 1 person in New York City and left 65 others hospitalized, CDC said.
Papayas affected by the recall were grown by Productores y Exportadores de Carica Papaya de Tecomán y Costa Alegre, and packed by Frutas Selectas de Tijuana. The fruit can be identified by yellow stickers on the papayas themselves, labels on cartons and by lot numbers, which can be found on the FDA recall notice.
If you purchased any papayas and are unaware where they came from, you should discard them immediately or return them to the place of purchase, FDA said.
Signs and symptoms of salmonella food poisoning (salmonellosis) include:
- Abdominal cramps
- Blood in the stool
Salmonellosis is particularly hazardous to children, the elderly, and people with compromised immune systems.
