What’s the problem?

July 12, 2018 – Plaintiff in the San Francisco Roundup lawsuit, 46-year-old Dewayne “Lee” Johnson, alleges that the Monsanto Company buried evidence linking the herbicide chemical to cancer. Johnson was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma in 2014, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

The chemical at issue is glyphosate, the active ingredient in Roundup, and a substance that was deemed “probably carcinogenic to humans” by the World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) in 2015. Glyphosate was added to California’s list of chemicals known to cause cancer in 2017.

Johnson’s complaint alleges that since 2000, there has been increasing evidence that glyphosate causes genetic damage, and actually has the ability to mutate the DNA of humans and other animals. Plaintiff further claims that Monsanto has actively downplayed and even hid evidence of this for years.

If Johnson proves victorious in his Roundup lawsuit against Monsanto, it could unleash a tidal wave of more than 4,000 similar lawsuits, according to Fortune.
