What’s the problem?
July 5, 2017 – The medications, known as proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), reduce stomach acid and are available over-the-counter and by prescription. This study involved prescription PPI use by millions of U.S. military veterans over an average of about 6 years, according to the study.
The researchers found that prolonged use of proton pump inhibitors was linked to a 25% increased risk of death compared to patients who took H2 blockers, another class of heartburn medication. Proton pump inhibitors are sold under the following brand names:
- Nexium (esomeprazole)
- Aciphex (rabeprazole)
- Protonix (pantoprazole)
- Prevacid (lansoprazole)
- Zegerid (omeprazole / sodium bicarbonate)
- Dexilant (dexlansoprazole)
- Prilosec (omeprazole)
The study’s authors also determined that long-term PPI use was associated with a 15% increased death rate compared to patients who took another kind of acid supressor other than H2 blockers. The mortality rate was also 23% higher among patients who took PPIs compared to people who took no acid suppressors, the study found.
The researchers concluded that physicians should only prescribe proton pump inhibitors when other heartburn treatments have failed, and only long enough to provide benefits that outweigh the risks. The increased death risk linked to the drugs was proportional to the length of use, the researchers found.
