What’s the Problem?

October 6, 2017 – While it has been widely misreported that glyphosate is now outlawed in France, the country actually “rowed back” on its original intention to ban the weedkiller, according to Natural Blaze.
Christophe Castaner, spokesman for the french government, said on Monday that France intended to phase out glyphosate completely by 2022 over fears that it may cause cancer.
With a base price value of €70.4 billion in 2011, France leads agricultural production in the EU. The country’s share of the value of European agricultural production is 18.1%. France’s production is ahead of Germany’s (13.4%), Italy’s (12.3%) and Spain’s (10.6%).
In June, the European Commission proposed an 18-month license extension for glyphosate after a study published by the European Chemical Agency (ECHA) argued that the herbicide should not be classified as a known human carcinogen (cancer-causing substance). An upcoming vote to either renew glyphosate’s license for the next decade or ban it entirely was originally expected at the beginning of this month, though it has been postponed for at least a month, according to Reuters.
